U.S. STEM OPT 2026: International Graduates Get Up to 36 Months of Work Authorization
Every student starting their study abroad journey dreams of having the opportunity to stay back and gain the practical experience in an international setting required to secure leading positions in their home country’s job market. They aim to learn advanced skillsets and their profitable application under world-renowned experts in their field, especially students in STEM. Consequently, international students tend to choose countries that are known for generous post-study work visa regulations. One of the trendiest choices is the United States with its 12-month program of Optional Practical Training (OPT) and an extended 24-month OPT for STEM majors.
What is U.S. STEM OPT?
The U.S. STEM OPT extension is one of the most appealing factors for international students. It allows students to extend their work authorisation beyond the initial 12-month OPT work permit by an additional 24 months. This extended period in the U.S. market can help students sharpen their skills and gain the practical and international exposure they need to achieve their long-term goals in their home country.
However, the rules governing this are extremely strict, and USCIS introduced even stricter guidelines in January 2026 – not only for students but for their employers as well. For students to experience a seamless working experience abroad, it is best for them to not only know their rights but also the regulations that bind them.
Eligibility Criteria for U.S. STEM OPT
The eligibility requirements for a STEM OPT for students and employers are different but must be satisfied by both:

Updated Rules of U.S. STEM OPT
Employer Attestation
Employers are now required to submit quarterly attestations rather than the usual annual review on Form I-983. Employers must use SEVIS to attest to their employees’ continued employment, wages and compliance with the training program. If they miss the deadline for submitting the quarterly attestations, the employment authorisation will be revoked.
Wage Documentation
The compensation must either meet or exceed the current Department of Labour (DOL) Prevailing Wage Determination (PWD) or a credible private wage survey for the particular Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code and locality. Real-time wage evidence (like paystubs or direct deposit records) must be submitted along with Form I-983 during its filing process. Additionally, verbal offers or simple offer letters usually do not get accepted. Support must be supplied through paystubs, W-2 forms, or direct deposit records.
Unemployment Gap
The overall permissible unemployment limit for STEM OPT is restricted to 60 days. In case of any activity change, it must be reported within a time period of 5 working days. If the stipulated limit exceeds the 60-day threshold, it results in an automatic termination of F-1 status and a 15-day deadline for leaving the U.S.
Training Plan Updates
In instances where changes in job title, core functions, or location of work (including working remotely) occur or when the wage drops below the prescribed wage rate, the employer might be treated as a new entity requiring submission of a new I-983 Form to the Designated School Official within 10 business days.
Conclusion
It is essential to be aware of and comply with all of the U.S. STEM OPT regulations in order to establish a career in the United States as an international graduate. F-1 students on STEM OPT can maximize their opportunities by following the rules and restrictions of their visa and then applying for an H-1B if they’d like to continue working in the US.
