From Sept 1, 2026, Indian students applying for Canada study permit (outside Quebec) must meet higher financial thresholds to prove funds. Notably, a single student will now need CAD 23,448 (₹16.16 Lakh) for living expenses – up from CAD 22,895 (₹15.78 Lakh). These updated amounts cover living costs only; first-year tuition and travel must still be shown separately. This change is part of Canada’s annual cost-of-living adjustments for international students. In practice, Indian students should plan for roughly ₹16 Lakh (and more if family accompanies) just for living funds, and be ready to document tuition and transportation expenses as well. Despite these hikes, Study In Canada remains an attractive goal – prepare early and stay informed!

What’s Changing?

  • Higher living-fund requirement. A lone applicant (outside Quebec) must show CAD 23,448 in liquid funds, up from the previous CAD 22,895. Think of it as needing about ₹0.38 Lakh extra than before.
  • Family funds rise too. For a student with dependents, the minimum funds increase for each member (e.g. CAD 29,192 for two people, CAD 35,888 for three).
  • Only living costs counted. These amounts cover living expenses only – tuition and travel are separate. IRCC expressly notes that tuition fees and transportation costs must be demonstrated in addition to these living-cost funds.
  • Annual adjustment policy. Canada’s immigration authority updates the proof-of-funds requirement yearly to keep pace with living costs. In fact, the threshold was just CAD 10,000 until 2023, then jumped to CAD 20,635 in Jan 2024 and CAD 22,895 in 2025. The new rise to CAD 23,448 is a modest 2.4% bump (CAD 553 more) over the 2025 level, reflecting inflation and housing costs.

Why Does Change Matters?

  • Real costs alignment. The government raised the bar because the old ₹10 Lakh-ish figure was far below actual living costs. Now, by linking fund requirements to living-cost data (Statistics Canada’s LICO), Indian students will have a financial cushion that better matches reality.
  • Protects students. These rules ensure you can afford basics like rent and food without working illegally. A Canadian immigration expert notes the rise is “part of Canada’s annual adjustment of the financial requirement… rather than a standalone policy restriction.” It’s meant to safeguard your stay, not block entry.
  • No free lunch – plan fully. Remember: the proof-of-funds amount doesn’t include tuition or travel. So if a program costs ₹20 Lakh/year, your total financial plan must cover that plus living costs. Think of it as setting aside a big cushion for all study expenses.
  • Timing your application. These new thresholds kick in for applications filed on or after Sept 1, 2026. If you submit earlier in 2026, the old (slightly lower) requirements apply. But any permit extended or renewed after Sept 1, 2026 will need the new amounts.

Even if UK university applications 2026 are on your mind, don’t overlook Canada’s options. A bit of extra savings now can pay off later. By getting your finances in order early – and by speaking to our India-based advisors – you can stay on track to Study In Canada without a last-minute rush.
