Types of USA Student Visas

Applicants do not directly choose the visa type. Instead, the university or sponsoring institution determines the appropriate visa category based on the student’s course and profile.
Below are the different types of USA student visas:

F-1 Student Visa: International students enrolling in a full-time academic program at a USA institution or university recognized by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are issued an F-1 Student Visa.
F-2 Dependent Visa: This visa is issued to dependents of an F-1 visa holder. Individuals with an F-2 visa cannot pursue higher education in the USA. However, children can study at the K-12 level.
M-1 Vocational Student Visa: International students enrolled in vocational or non-academic programs in the USA are granted an M-1 Visa. Students must maintain a full course of study. Part-time study is permitted only with approval from the Designated School Official (DSO).
M-2 Dependent Visa: This visa is issued to dependents of an M-1 visa holder. M-2 visa holders cannot pursue higher education in the USA, although children may study at the K-12 level.
J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa: The J-1 Visa is issued to students participating in approved exchange visitor programs in the USA. Students must maintain a full course of study and can reduce their course load only with approval from the Responsible Officer (RO) or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) under the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
J-1 Exchange Student Intern Visa: This visa category is suitable for students planning internships or training programs in the USA. It allows participation in exchange programs such as internships, trainee programs, and educational exchange opportunities.
J-1 Exchange Visitor Categories: Includes Professors, Researchers, Specialists, Trainees, Physicians, Interns, and Short-Term Scholars. These individuals visit the USA under programs approved by the Department of State (DOS).
J-2 Dependent Visa: This visa is issued to dependents of J-1 visa holders. J-2 visa holders are permitted to study full-time or part-time in the USA.

Steps Involved in the USA Student Visa Application Process

Receive Admission and Form I-20: Once a student is accepted into an accredited USA university or institution, the institution issues the Form I-20, which contains details about the student’s study plans and stay in the USA.
Pay the SEVIS Fee: Students must pay the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee before applying for the visa.
Complete the DS-160 Form: All international students applying for an F-1 Visa must complete the online DS-160 Visa Application Form and save the application number for scheduling the visa interview.
Schedule and Attend the Visa Interview: After completing the application process, students must schedule and attend their visa interview at the US Embassy or Consulate.

Post-Study Opportunities

F-1 Student Visa

International students on an F-1 visa must maintain a full-time course of study. Part-time study is only permitted with approval from the Designated School Official (DSO) and must comply with U.S. immigration regulations.

F-1 students are generally allowed to work: Up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions (on-campus employment), Full-time during official breaks and holidays. To become eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT), students must complete at least one full academic year in the United States. Students who graduate from eligible STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, allowing up to 36 months of total OPT duration.

F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT provides temporary employment authorization related to a student’s field of study. Most universities and colleges offer students guidance and support for OPT applications. For students applying for the STEM OPT extension, the employer must be registered with the E-Verify program, and the job role must be directly related to the student’s STEM degree

J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa

J-1 visa holders may be allowed to work off-campus with prior authorization from their Responsible Officer (RO) or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). Employment permissions and working hours depend on the specific exchange program regulations. J-1 students may also be eligible for Academic Training (AT), which allows practical work experience related to their field of study up to 18 months for most programs, and 36 months for post-doctoral training in certain cases

USA Student Visa Processing Time

The USA student visa processing time for Indian students usually takes around 4 to 6 weeks. However, it is important to begin the non-immigrant student visa process at least 120 days before the program start date.
Students are advised not to delay the visa process after receiving their acceptance letter from the college or institution, as completing the USA student visa process from India can sometimes take several months.
