Heriot-Watt University Eligibility & Admission Requirements

One of the key requirements for Indian students to qualify under Heriot-Watt’s eligibility is that it is not only about scoring a specific percentage. Heriot-Watt reviews applications independently, and therefore, requirements can differ by course, level of study and academic background. The University also mentions that specific subjects may need higher grades.     Heriot-Watt's published grades are a guide rather than a guaranteed admission threshold, individual courses may require higher or subject-specific grades, and your previous qualification must generally be no more than 3 years old for undergraduate entry or 5 years old for foundation entry at the time of enrolment.

Undergraduate admission

In the case of undergraduate admission, Indian students must refer to their respective course guidelines. As per the university’s guidelines, a student must have scored 65–70% marks in grade 12th.  If students do not qualify for direct undergraduate admissions, they can also opt for a foundation programme. The university allows students from  India to enroll for its foundation programmes.

Post-graduate admission

To be eligible for a postgraduate programme in the university, students must hold a relevant undergraduate degree. In most cases, the university mentions that both First and Second class Honours degrees in related subjects will suffice; however, each programme can set its own criteria for admission.

Heriot-Watt University English Language Requirements

Heriot-Watt University Intakes

Deciding on an intake is one of the first major decisions after choosing your course. It determines when you will begin your classes, and also impacts your application timeline, accommodation, travel, and visa planning. The possibility to go for an intake program depends on each course individually, so students have to check if a certain Heriot-Watt program accepts graduates for both September and January months. The university suggests checking a specific course page for deadlines and starting dates.

January Intake

Having the option to enrol in January can be beneficial for students who are unable to start their university education in September. However, January enrollment at Heriot-Watt University is limited to specific courses, so it is advisable to check the official curriculum beforehand. Heriot-Watt provides a good example of this flexibility in its foundation programs. According to Heriot-Watt University's academic regulations, "most programs in the Global College are available for both September and January intakes, with international students applying for their January entry online." Accommodation is another important issue. The university's accommodation guarantee in Edinburgh does not apply to "students starting their postgraduate studies in January." Consequently, accommodation will be provided depending on its availability to these students.  Thus, Indian students planning to start their studies in January should find out three things: the availability of the program, the application deadline, and whether they have guaranteed accommodation at the start of their studies.

September Intake

Many students perceive September as the most suitable time to enter the UK university with the full range of opportunities available for international students. At Heriot-Watt University, September is the primary period for admission. International students can apply for the UK campuses programs through UCAS or online application forms. The September admission in Heriot-Watt offers many advantages. However, it is important to consider all the other parameters, while deciding the intake time period.

UK Student Visa

  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS): You must have an unconditional offer from Heriot-Watt University and receive a CAS number before applying for your Student visa.
  • Valid Passport: A current passport or other valid travel identification document is required for the application.
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency: Evidence of meeting the required English language level (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent) as specified by the university and UKVI.
  • Financial Requirements (Maintenance Funds): Proof of funds to cover living costs is required — students should show evidence of at least £1,136 per month for study in the UK (this may vary based on course length and location), in addition to funds to cover tuition fees.
  • Tuberculosis (TB) Test Certificate: Required for applicants from countries where TB testing is mandated by UKVI.
  • Academic Qualifications/Transcripts: Certificates and transcripts of previous qualifications may need to be submitted as part of the application.
  • Application Fee and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): Payment of the visa application fee along with the IHS to access the UK's National Health Service (NHS) during your stay.
  • Biometric Information: Applicants must provide biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) as part of the visa process.
  • Parental/Guardian Consent (if under 18): Additional consent documents are required for applicants who are minors.
  • Visa Application Timing: Applications should be made with awareness of current UKVI rules, including recent changes such as the Graduate Route length reduction — for applications made after 1 January 2027, undergraduate and postgraduate taught students will be granted 18 months of post-study permission, while PhD applicants will continue to receive 3 years.
  • Nationality-Specific Restrictions: Note that a 'Visa Brake' currently applies to nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan, meaning Student visas will not be issued to applicants from these countries applying from outside the UK.
  • Route Selection Based on Course Duration: If studying for six months or less, a Visit Visa may be an alternative option, though a Student visa is advisable if part of a longer programme remains or if the right to work in the UK is needed.
  • University Visa Support: Heriot-Watt's Student Visa and Advice team in Scotland assists applicants with all aspects of the visa process, both before arrival and after enrolment.
Note: Visa rules (fees, financial thresholds, Graduate Route duration) change periodically, so it's worth confirming current figures directly on Heriot-Watt's official visas and immigration page or the UK government's site before finalizing an application.
