The global music industry is in a state of complete upheaval. As streaming platforms, independent distribution companies, social media algorithms, and artificial intelligence technology redefine creativity and business processes, musicians are now more than performers; they are creative entrepreneurs with multiple skills.

Recognising the changes in the market, Dubai is taking a significant step in developing its cultural and creative economy. SAE University College Dubai launched the first accredited Bachelor of Music in Dubai and will accept its first students in September 2026. This is in line with efforts to ensure that the cultural and creative industries contribute at least 5 per cent of the national GDP by 2031.

Bridging the Local Education Gap

Musicians in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) historically could find music lessons through private teachers, specialised schools and workshops, but if they wanted to study in Dubai for a complete, industry-based higher degree, there was no choice other than to study abroad in Europe, the UK or North America.

Jan Horn, the Managing Director at SAE University College Dubai, states that the program fills the missing link between the ever-expanding live entertainment market and the local educational institutions.

“For that ambition to be sustainable, the UAE needs more than venues, events and entertainment companies. It also needs a strong local talent pipeline and higher education programmes that develop the musicians, producers, songwriters, composers, entrepreneurs and other creative professionals who will contribute to that economy.” — Jan Horn, Managing Director, SAE University College Dubai.

Bachelor of Music in Dubai: Key Program Highlights

The Bachelor of Music in Dubai program lasts for three years and is offered full-time. It moves away from the traditional teaching of strictly academic material and instead places emphasis on modern performance, electronic music, and commercial production.

  • Artists as Entrepreneurs: Various modules explore topics such as artist management, intellectual property law, copyrights, contracts, social media marketing, and business development, which equip students for future careers as independent labels and distributors.
  • Hands-On Studio and Live Projects: Students start working at professional studios from year one of their studies using the Digital Audio Workstations. Their studies are filled with community projects, client briefs, and learning how to set up stages for live performances.
  • Work Integrated Learning: In the last year of the program, students have to complete work placements in addition to working on their main production portfolio project, getting real work experience while graduating.
  • Industry Partners: The program has been developed in cooperation with different companies from near and far, such as Melody House, Muzikminds, and songwriter and producer Miklos Malek.

Treating AI as a Collaborator, Not a Replacement

One of the most unique aspects of the Bachelor of Music in Dubai program is that it incorporates Artificial Intelligence into its core curriculum. The degree program is geared to address both the creative use and legal challenges that arise with increasing use of generative AI in songwriting, arrangement, and audio engineering.

A leading figure in this development is Zubin Aroz, the Head of the Department of Music at SAE University College in Dubai. He believes that the students are taught the fundamentals of music theory, critical listening, and the techniques of songwriting before adding digital intelligence to their toolkit.

In the Emerging Creative Technologies unit, students are offered training in computer-assisted production and law related to AI operation, such as copyright legislation and originality of content written through AI. The emphasis of the training is on creating graduates who will use AI as a useful creative tool while retaining their own human voice.
