University of Sunderland Scholarships for Indian Students

The University of Sunderland offers several scholarships that make studying in the UK more affordable for Indian students:
  • Global Leaders Scholarship: up to £6,000 off tuition for eligible international students, one of the more substantial fixed-value awards among mid-tier UK universities.
  • Automatic regional tuition discounts: some undergraduate and postgraduate international students receive a scholarship without applying, based on their home region; this is applied automatically if you’re eligible, rather than requiring a separate form.
  • Course-specific scholarships: tuition reductions of up to £5,000 tied to particular programmes, varying by intake.
  • Alumni progression discount: full or partial fee waivers for Sunderland graduates returning for a postgraduate degree.
  • Check your offer letter carefully before assuming you need to apply separately; several of these awards are applied automatically based on eligibility.

University of Sunderland Eligibility & Admission Requirements

Entry requirements are broadly consistent across Sunderland’s UK campuses, though individual programmes, particularly Nursing and Pharmacy, carry additional conditions worth checking before you assume the general figures apply.

Bachelor’s Degree

  • Class 12 (any recognised board): typically 60–65% overall, with pharmacy and nursing generally sitting at the higher end.
  • An alternative route via a 10+12+3-year Diploma in a related subject, with a minimum 60% in the Diploma.
  • English proficiency evidence, unless a Class 12 waiver applies.
  • Some regulated professional courses (Nursing, for instance) require additional non-academic checks, such as an interview or self-declaration forms, under the university’s own admissions policy.

Master’s Degree

  •  A recognised bachelor’s degree, generally assessed on individual merit rather than a single fixed percentage cutoff. Sunderland’s own admissions policy states that qualifications are considered alongside work experience and educational background, not in isolation.
  • IELTS 6.0 overall (minimum 5.5 per component), or equivalent.
  • A personal statement and academic transcripts; a CV for MBA and some professional programmes.
  • Note: Sunderland assesses postgraduate applications holistically rather than against one rigid cutoff; a borderline percentage doesn’t automatically rule you out; it's worth applying with a strong personal statement.

University of Sunderland English Proficiency requirements

Requirements differ slightly by campus and by regulated professional courses, so always confirm the specific band for your chosen programme rather than assuming the general 6.0 figure applies university-wide:
  • Standard requirement across most undergraduate and postgraduate courses: IELTS 6.0 overall, with no component below 5.5
  • PTE Academic: a minimum of 59 in each of the four skill areas
  • A genuinely distinctive option: Sunderland runs its own in-house English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT), benchmarked against IELTS but with some differences in structure and task type — a useful alternative if a standard IELTS sitting isn’t convenient, though results aren’t transferable to other institutions.
  • Applicants with 70%+ in English at Class 12 from a recognised board may qualify for a waiver on many courses.
  • Students who fall short of the required score can take one of the university’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pre-sessional courses before their main programme starts

How to Apply to University of Sunderland from India

The University of Sunderland welcomes a growing number of Indian students each year, thanks to its affordable tuition, strong scholarship offerings, and industry-focused courses. If you're planning to apply from India, here's a step-by-step breakdown of the application process, required documents, and important deadlines to keep in mind:
  • Decide which campus fits your plan: Sunderland’s North East campus or the London campus at Canary Wharf, since this affects your fee, deposit structure, and the surrounding city experience, not just your course.
  • Check your course’s specific entry requirements and English-language band, since these vary by programme and campus rather than following one university-wide standard.
  • Apply through UCAS for undergraduate courses, or directly through the university’s application system for postgraduate courses.
  • Submit supporting documents: transcripts, personal statement, English test evidence (or waiver documentation), and references where required.
  • Receive your offer letter, which will specify your fee, any automatic scholarship applied, and your deposit requirement of £3,500 flat for Sunderland’s main campus or 50% of tuition for the London campus.
  • Pay your deposit to receive your CAS, which you’ll need for your student visa application.
  • Apply for your student visa, then arrange accommodation: Sunderland offers halls within reach of both its Sunderland campuses, while London campus students arrange accommodation in the city separately.

University of Sunderland Intakes

The University of Sunderland has its main intake in September, offering the widest choice of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across its UK campuses. A January intake is also available for a selection of postgraduate programmes, particularly in areas such as Business.
Intake Details
January Intake Selected postgraduate programmes, particularly in Business, accept January entry at the Sunderland and London campuses. Availability is more limited than September, so check your specific course and campus before planning.
September Intake The primary intake across nearly all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at all campuses, offering the widest course choice and the fullest scholarship consideration window.

UK Student Visa

International students who need a UK Student visa must meet both the University of Sunderland’s enrolment requirements and the UK’s immigration requirements:
  • The university issues your CAS once your deposit is paid and offer conditions are met. Remember the deposit structure differs by campus (flat £3,500 for Sunderland, 50% of tuition for London).
  • You’ll need to provide evidence of your remaining tuition liability plus maintenance funds under standard UKVI rules, held for 28 consecutive days.
  • Sponsored students need an official sponsor letter confirming fee coverage; if a sponsor later withdraws funding, the student remains personally responsible for the outstanding balance.
  • Standard visa processing takes around three weeks.
  • International students can work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during official holidays, under standard student visa conditions.
  • Current UKVI financial thresholds should be checked on GOV.UK directly, since these figures are reviewed periodically.

Why Study at University of Sunderland?

The case here rests on a combination of factors such as the following:
  • a genuine choice between a low-cost coastal city and a Central London postcode within the same degree.
  • a Guardian ranking that’s climbed 23 places in three years, and a QS Stars 5-star rating spanning teaching, employability, inclusiveness, and facilities rather than one narrow metric.
  • With a course portfolio deliberately built around market demand and the latest trends, Sunderland becomes a genuinely practical bet for a student optimising for affordability and employability over a global research reputation.

University of Sunderland Student Life Experiences

Life at the Sunderland campus is shaped heavily by the coastal city setting with a relatively compact student environment:
  • Students can make use of university societies, sports clubs, student support services and campus facilities.
  • The London campus offers an entirely different experience by design. Canary Wharf’s financial-district setting puts students close to major employers rather than a seaside city, which matters specifically for Business and Finance students building UK networking connections during their degree.
  • Whichever campus you choose, Team Sunderland runs over 30 sports clubs and 50 teams across the university.
  • Students’ Union operates as a genuinely student-run body rather than a university department, with dedicated support for international students settling in from overseas.

Frequently Asked Questions

No official figure is published. Third-party estimates suggest a rate around 27%, though this varies by source and methodology meaningfully more selective than some other mid-tier UK universities, though course-specific competition (particularly for Nursing and Pharmacy) matters more than any single university-wide number.
Yes, on the metrics it specifically targets a QS Stars 5-star rating across teaching, employability, inclusiveness, and facilities, and a Guardian ranking that’s climbed from 50th to 27th in three years. Its global research ranking is more modest, which reflects its teaching-focused identity rather than a quality gap.
Yes, with nearly 7,900 international students from over 160 countries, three campus options across two countries, and automatic scholarships that don’t require a separate application for eligible students.
For the main Sunderland campus, £16,500–£19,000 a year for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses (2026/27). The London campus runs a broadly similar band, though check the specific course page since the two campuses set fees separately.
Yes, alongside PTE Academic and the university’s own in-house English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT). A Class 12 English waiver is also available on many courses for students scoring 70%+.
Generally 6.0 overall with no component below 5.5, across most undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Some regulated professional courses may require a higher score.
Undergraduate applicants follow UCAS deadlines. Postgraduate applications are generally accepted year-round with no single fixed deadline, though applying well ahead of your intended intake is strongly advised, particularly for the January intake.
Costs vary by campus and accommodation type. Sunderland’s North East campuses are considerably more affordable than the London campus, where rent and living costs sit much closer to Central London pricing.
