About University of Chester

Founded in 1839, the University of Chester is England's fifth-oldest higher education institution, now spread across six sites in Chester and the North West: Exton Park, Queen's Park, Kingsway, Wheeler, Gateway House and Bache Hall. It's home to around 14,000 students from 125 countries, and for Indian applicants it sits in a particular niche: a genuinely accessible entry bar, a fee that undercuts most Russell Group and post-92 alternatives, and one of the more generous automatic scholarship policies among UK universities of its size. This page works from Chester's own published pages rather than recycled aggregator figures, because on a few points entry percentages, English-test waivers, and the visa maintenance amount the two disagree, and the difference matters for a student deciding whether they qualify.

University of Chester Ranking

The University of Chester has been named the best UK university for international study and for postgraduate study for two consecutive years at the WhatUni Student Choice Awards (2024 and 2025), and Chester city itself has held continuous Purple Flag accreditation since 2018.  Let's look at some other rankings as well:

Accommodation (university halls or shared private) £450–£650
Food and groceries £150–£220

University of Chester Scholarships for Indian Students

The University of Chester provides a range of scholarships and tuition fee discounts for eligible international students, including applicants from India.
  • International Scholarship Award: automatic for all undergraduate and 12-month postgraduate taught students; considered at the point of application, with any award shown directly on the offer letter. No separate form, no essay, no deadline. It does not apply to postgraduate research degrees, and employer- or government-sponsored students are not eligible for it or any other fee reduction.
  • International Alumni Scholarship: for Chester Bachelor's graduates progressing to a Chester Master's. Excludes anyone who already holds a Master's, foundation-degree graduates, the MBA and several named professional programmes, and all research degrees. Terms are refreshed each cycle, so confirm current dates before quoting them to a student.
  • Commonwealth Scholarship: 4 places for 2026/7, restricted to two programmes only: MSc Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine, and MSc Family and Child Psychology. Requires a 2:1 (or 2:2 plus a relevant Master's), and a two-part application : the standard Chester application plus a separate Commonwealth Scholarship Commission form.
  • Chevening Scholarship: the UK government's flagship scholarship, applied for through the Chevening programme directly rather than through Chester; Chester is one of many eligible host universities.

University of Chester Eligibility & Admission Requirements

The University of Chester fees for Indian students vary depending on the course and level of study. Indian students should check the specific tuition fee for their chosen undergraduate or postgraduate programme, as fees can differ across subject areas.

Bachelor’s Degree

  • Chester doesn't apply one flat percentage to every Indian board; this is the detail most comparison sites flatten out:
  • 65% or above in Class XII from CBSE, CISCE, IGCSE, or major state boards.
  • 70% or above in Class XII specifically for these boards: Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand.
  • Foundation Year route: 60% from Central Boards and major state boards (the nine boards listed above are not eligible for this route).
  • Courses requiring a 2:1-equivalent or higher will ask for a higher percentage than the general entry bar above.

Master’s Degree

  • A 3-year Bachelor's degree at 55–65%, depending on the course and academic history. Chester is one of the more flexible UK universities on this point, since many institutions want a 4-year degree by default.
  • Bachelor's in Engineering / B.Tech / MBBS / BDS are accepted at the same 55–65% band.
  • Courses asking for a 2:1 or above will carry a correspondingly higher equivalency requirement.
  • Applicants with significant gaps in education are treated as higher-risk for visa purposes and will need to document what they did during the gap and why they're returning to study; gaps of 10+ years trigger a fuller review of qualifications, employment history and motivation.

University of Chester English Proficiency requirements

Indian Class XII English does not have to attempt an English test in these cases:
  • 75% or above in Class XII English: Chester accepts a minimum of 75% in 12th-standard English, subject to its board and state-specific conditions.
  • This route is not available for English marksheets from NIOS, vocational boards, or from the Central/State boards of Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Jharkhand or Chhattisgarh; applicants from those states need IELTS Academic regardless of their English percentage.
Fine below the minimum scores required for different levels of studies:
Test Undergraduate Postgraduate
IELTS Academic (incl. One Skill Retake) 6.0 overall, min. 5.5 per sub-skill 6.5 overall, min. 5.5 per sub-skill
PTE Academic 59 overall, min. 59 per sub-skill 62 overall, min. 59 per sub-skill
TOEFL iBT 79 overall 91 overall
Duolingo English Test 105 120
Always check the specific course page. A small number of professional or clinical programmes (Nursing, Physician Associate, Social Work) set a higher English bar than the general entry table above.

How to Apply to University of Chester from India

To apply to the University of Chester from India, students generally need to choose their course, check the entry requirements, and submit an online application with the required academic and English-language documents. Read the details:
  • Shortlist your course and confirm the country-specific entry requirements against your board; see the Admission Requirement section above.
  • Undergraduate applications go through UCAS; postgraduate, MBA, Foundation Year and part-time undergraduate applications go directly through Chester's own portal; it's free either way (UCAS carries its own separate £28.95 application charge, not a Chester fee).
  • Submit: academic transcripts and certificates, proof of English proficiency, an academic reference, a Statement of Purpose, and a copy of your passport.
  • Some courses (art and design, performance-based subjects) additionally ask for a portfolio, audition footage, or evidence of relevant work experience.
  • If you've previously studied or worked in the UK, you'll also need copies of any past visas and CAS letters.
  • Once you receive an offer, pay the tuition deposit to confirm your place and begin the CAS process.
  • With your CAS issued, apply for your UK Student visa; see the Visa Requirements section below.

University of Chester Intakes

The University of Chester generally offers multiple intakes across selected courses, giving international students flexibility in planning their studies.
Intake Key Points
January Intake
  • Smaller intake with availability across a limited selection of taught postgraduate courses.
  • Suitable for students who miss the September intake or need additional time to meet academic or English-language conditions.
  • Course availability should be checked individually before applying.
September Intake
  • Primary intake with the widest range of programmes, including undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA and Foundation Year courses.
  • Undergraduate applications are made through UCAS, while postgraduate applications can be submitted through the University of Chester.
  • Applications are generally handled on a rolling basis, so applying early can allow more time for the admission and visa process.

UK Student Visa

International students applying to study at the University of Chester must meet the UK Student visa requirements and receive a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the university.
  • A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is issued by Chester once your tuition deposit is paid; the university sponsors the CAS, but UKVI alone decides the visa outcome.
  • Maintenance funds covering living expenses (see Cost of Living table below) plus any tuition balance still outstanding on your CAS, held for 28 consecutive days.
  • A tuberculosis test certificate is mandatory for applicants from India.
  • The Immigration Health Surcharge is paid upfront for the length of your course.
  • The standard UK student visa application fee.
  • Standard processing time for applications filed from India currently runs three to four weeks; build in extra time around peak intake periods.
  • Graduate Route (post-study work visa): still 2 years for Bachelor's/Master's graduates whose Graduate Route application is submitted on or before 31 December 2026; drops to 18 months for applications submitted from 1 January 2027 onwards. The date that matters is when you apply for the Graduate Route, not when your course starts. PhD graduates keep the full 3 years regardless.

University of Chester Student Life Experiences

Chester's two of the greatest assets that it offers to students are: safety and support that goes beyond the classroom.
  • The city has held Purple Flag status since 2018, a national accreditation for a well-managed, safe evening and nighttime economy, renewed every year since (most recently reconfirmed in February 2026) with the university named as one of the partner organisations behind the bid, alongside Cheshire Police and the local council.
  • Alongside standard careers advice, Chester places real emphasis on turning coursework into employability. Chester Credentials (free short courses layered onto your degree) and built-in placement or project opportunities are designed to give you something concrete to show an employer besides the degree itself.
  • An active Indian Society sits within the Chester Students' Union, alongside dedicated cultural and religious societies more broadly.
  • Indian and South Asian groceries and food options are genuinely present in the city. The Chester Tandoori, Chai Station, Zing Asia, the World Food Shop and a halal-certified Village Food & Meat Centre are all within reach of the main campuses.
  • StudentCrowd's 2025 rankings, compiled entirely from over 32,000 verified student reviews, placed Chester 3rd in the UK for personal tutor support, a category it's held a top-10 spot for three years running.

Why Study at University of Chester?

  • The university accepts applications from most CBSE/CISCE/IGCSE applicants for undergraduate courses. A 3-year Bachelor's is accepted for postgraduate study, a genuine differentiator against universities that insist on a 4-year degree.
  • Their International Scholarship Award is automatic and needs no separate application. Making it a hassle-free process.
  • Top pick for International and Postgraduate Study voted by students, not compiled from institutional self-reporting.
  • A safe, compact city. Purple Flag-accredited since 2018, with all six campus sites within easy reach of accommodation and each other.
  • Business School credibility that travels. AACSB accreditation and THE Business School of the Year 2024 carry weight with employers back in India, not just in the UK.

Why Choose Global Opportunities to Study at University of Chester?

  • We're listed as an official local representative on the University of Chester's own India page, not a claim we're making unverified.
  • 18 branches across India, so in-person guidance is available close to home rather than only over email.
  • Dedicated counselling on Chester's board-specific entry percentages and English-waiver exceptions – the details this page has covered in depth, and the ones most students get wrong when they self-apply
  • End-to-end support: shortlisting, application, financial documentation for your CAS, and visa filing
  • Active marketing and outreach across five major study destinations, including a strong, established UK pipeline into universities like Chester.
