About Teesside University

Times Higher Education named Teesside University as the “University of the Year in 2025”, following its earlier win in 2009. Pair that with a Gold rating overall and Gold ratings for both Student Experience and Student Outcomes in the UK government’s Teaching Excellence Framework, and you get an institution with a strong focus on teaching quality, student outcomes, employability, and value for money. It’s also comparatively affordable by UK standards, at £17,000 a year for many international programmes, although fees vary by course.    This page covers what that actually means for an Indian applicant, real fees taken directly from Teesside’s own fee schedule, the exact entry requirements the university publishes for Indian qualifications, and where the university’s genuine strengths lie.

Teesside University Ranking

Teesside’s ranking story doesn’t follow the usual script, and it’s worth reading the badges rather than a single global number, because the university’s own strongest evidence sits outside the  QS/THE world tables entirely. But we will still look at the ranking:

Teesside University Courses for Indian Students

Course choice at Teesside is really a choice about which of its five schools you want to get into, since that’s the level at which the university’s actual strengths sit; the Campus amenities, the industry links, and the placement structure all attach to a specific school rather than the university as a whole.

Teesside University Fees for Indian Students

There’s no separate India-specific fee band at Teesside University. Indian applicants are charged the standard international tuition fee applicable to their programme. For 2026–27, the standard fee is £17,000 per year for full-time undergraduate degrees and one-year postgraduate taught degrees, although fees can vary for specific postgraduate programmes and study routes.

Teesside University Cost of Living

Middlesbrough is genuinely one of the more affordable UK study locations, and Teesside’s own visa-evidence figures make this concrete rather than a vague marketing claim. We have planned out an average monthly expenses table; check below:
Expense / Requirement Estimated Cost
University accommodation From £85/week
Accommodation with bills Included in advertised university accommodation
Student Visa maintenance requirement £1,171/month
Maximum maintenance requirement for 9 months £10,539
Cost comparison with Newcastle 6.7% lower, including rent
Cost comparison with York 12.7% lower, including rent
Accommodation distance from campus Approximately 5 minutes' walk

Teesside University Scholarships for Indian Students

Teesside runs “an enhanced scholarship portfolio for new, eligible applicants,” in the university’s own words, alongside partnerships with external bodies including the British Council. The specific awards referenced across current admissions guidance include:
  • International Scholarship: A fee waiver (commonly cited around £2,500) applied to your first year of undergraduate study, or offset against total fees owed for one- or two-year postgraduate students.
  • GREAT Scholarship: A British Council partnership scholarship for Indian students specifically, applicable to eligible one-year postgraduate programmes.
  • EU Scholarship: A separate award for eligible EU-domiciled applicants (not applicable to Indian nationals, included here only to avoid confusion with the International Scholarship above).
Scholarship values, eligible programmes, and application windows are reissued in each admissions cycle, so confirm the live terms directly through Teesside’s international scholarships page rather than treating any figure here as fixed and note that some awards are automatic on holding an eligible offer, while others need a specific timed action (like an early deposit) to actually qualify.

Teesside University Eligibility & Admission Requirements

These are Teesside’s own published requirements for Indian applicants, taken directly from the university’s country-specific entry requirements page, and worth relying on.

Bachelor’s Degree

  • Year 1 entry: Class 12 (Indian Standard XII) 70% minimum from all state boards
  • Alternative route: a Diploma from a State Board of Technical Education, 60% minimum (including for MEng progression).
  • IB Diploma: 27 points or more considered for direct admission to Bachelor’s degree courses
  • Advanced entry to Year 3: possible with a three- or four-year diploma, decided case-by-case, provided your prior course closely matches Teesside’s curriculum (e.g., Engineering, Technology)
  • English language evidence, unless a recognised waiver applies.

Master’s Degree

  • General requirement: minimum 55% or CGPA 5.8/10 from a recognised Indian university
  • Reduced requirement for specific top-tier universities: 50% or CGPA 5.5/10 minimum from Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Jadavpur, or Kolkata University a genuinely notable concession most UK universities don’t publish this explicitly.
  • IELTS 6.0–6.5 or equivalent, depending on the course.
  • Academic transcripts and a personal statement or SOP.
  • Foundation and Extended programme applications are considered case-by-case by the relevant School rather than against a fixed published threshold.

Teesside University English Proficiency  Requirements

  • Standard requirement across most undergraduate and postgraduate courses: IELTS 6.0–6.5, depending on the specific programme
  • If you’re based in India, Teesside’s own guidance is direct: a specific alternative testing service the university offers elsewhere isn’t currently available in India, so Indian applicants need to take a standard four-band English test such as IELTS
  • Pre-sessional English Language courses are available for applicants who fall short of the required score, designed to build classroom and social English confidence before your main programme starts, and to help you adjust to UK life ahead of enrolment
  • In-sessional English support continues once you’re enrolled, tailored to your ongoing academic needs.

How to Apply to Teesside University from India

  1. Choose your route: undergraduate applicants can apply either through UCAS or directly to Teesside via its own international online admissions form; both are valid, official paths (Teesside explicitly offers the direct route as an alternative to UCAS, which isn't the case at every UK university). Postgraduate applicants apply directly to the university.
  2. Apply through whichever channel suits you: directly online, through an in-country agent, or through Teesside's overseas/regional office. Check your country page on the Teesside site for the specific agents and regional office contacts available in India.
  3. Upload your documents: academic qualifications and English language certificates should be uploaded with your application; if any document isn't in English, you need a fully certified translation that can be independently verified by the Home Office.
  4. Qualification verification: as an international applicant, your academic qualifications go through a verification step as part of the admissions process; this isn't optional and happens before your offer is finalised.
  5. Receive your decision: Teesside sends an offer by email, or a rejection if you don't meet entry criteria. A conditional offer means you still need to submit supporting evidence, such as English scores, transcripts, or mark sheets, which you can submit through the overseas office, your agent, or directly to the university.
  6. Check if you need an ATAS certificate: this applies only to certain postgraduate programmes in scientific subjects with potential dual-use/weapons-related sensitivity. Most Teesside master's programmes don't require it; your offer letter will confirm either way. If needed, apply before your CAS is issued and allow at least 20 working days; there's no fee for it.
  7. Pay your deposit: once your conditions are met, you pay the deposit; payment details are sent along with your offer letter.
  8. Pay your Confirmation Payment and return your signed acceptance form to formally confirm your place. This unlocks access to Teesside's Welcome Hub with pre-arrival guidance.
  9. Receive your CAS: you can apply for this up to six months before your course start date (three months if you're already in the UK).
  10. Apply for your Student visa using your CAS, and attend a UKVI interview if required.
  11. Arrange accommodation and pre-arrival logistics, then book travel to arrive before your induction programme begins.

Teesside University Intakes

Teesside University generally offers multiple intakes for international students, with the September intake being the main intake for a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Some courses may also be available in January or other intakes, depending on programme availability.
Intake Start Date Suitable For
September 2026 Intake 21 September 2026 Undergraduate & Postgraduate courses
January 2027 Intake 18 January 2027 Selected Postgraduate courses
May 2027 Intake 17 May 2027 Selected Postgraduate courses
The university's standard 2026–27 undergraduate academic year begins with Welcome Week from 21–25 September 2026, followed by Semester 1 from 28 September 2026.

UK Student Visa

The visa process at Teesside is unusually easy to plan around because the university publishes exact figures rather than the vague “sufficient funds” language some institutions use worth knowing since it means you can calculate your total visa-stage cost well before you apply.
  • The sequence runs in a fixed order, i.e your £4,000 deposit unlocks your CAS, and your CAS is the document your actual Student visa application is built on. From there, UKVI wants to see two categories of evidence sitting alongside your CAS: your remaining tuition liability, and your maintenance funds.
  • The maintenance figure itself depends on which Teesside campus you’re headed to. Middlesbrough applicants need to evidence £1,171 a month for up to nine months (£10,539 total), while the London campus carries the higher £1,529 a month (£13,761 total) that reflects the capital’s living costs. Both figures must be held for 28 consecutive days, ending no more than 31 days before you submit your visa application: a timing detail that trips up applicants who check their bank balance too early or too late relative to the submission date.
A few situations change this picture:
  • If your fees are being paid by a sponsor, a government scheme or an employer, the sponsor needs to provide an official letter confirming this before Teesside will issue your CAS, and you’ll need the original at enrolment.
  • If your visa application is refused, Teesside refunds your deposit; if it’s approved, the university keeps it against your fees.
UKVI’s own financial thresholds are reviewed periodically, so the £1,171/£1,529 figures above should be cross-checked against GOV.UK’s current Student visa guidance before you finalise your funding plan, since a change here would supersede what’s stated on Teesside’s own fee page.

Career Opportunities & Placements

In 2024, the median salary for working-age postgraduates from Teesside was £47,000, £5,000 more than the median for working-age graduates overall (£42,000), and 79% of Teesside postgraduates were in high-skilled employment, compared with 67.9% of working-age graduates generally. That’s a real, sourced comparison rather than a vague “our graduates succeed” claim.
Job Role / Designation Typical UK Salary Range
Software Developer £30,000–£50,000

Teesside University Campus Life

  • Middlesbrough’s campus is compact and self-contained, centred on the Campus Heart, The Curve, and Bios buildings, with the Students’ Union running clubs, societies, and volunteering as the hub of student life.
  • As Europe’s first Adobe Creative Campus, Teesside gives animation, design, and digital media students direct access to industry-standard Adobe tools through the university’s own global innovation network:a concrete facility advantage, not just branding.
  • Sport facilities include a modern gym and fitness classes alongside competitive and recreational clubs, and Middlesbrough itself offers an accessible, low-cost student life with the North York Moors and coast within easy reach for weekend trips.

Teesside University Student life Experiences

With over 2,200 South Asian students recruited in the last three academic years and an established Indian alumni community:
  • Teesside’s international base is substantial enough that Indian students join an existing social network rather than arriving as isolated newcomers.
  • The university markets itself explicitly around affordability and a “friendly town that feels like home”, a different pitch from universities leaning on prestige or a big-city location.
  • Local life includes the Orange Pip Market, a regular community event with food, music, and stalls that’s become a fixture of the university’s own promotional material, a small but telling sign of how integrated the campus is with the town around it.

Why Study at Teesside University?

  • A UK government Teaching Excellence Framework panel, not Teesside itself, rated the university Gold in every category it assesses, and Times Higher Education has handed it the University of the Year award twice, a distinction no other modern UK university holds even once.
  • Neither of those came from a survey of academic reputation, which is the metric Teesside doesn’t compete well on and doesn’t pretend to. What it offers instead is a flat, predictable £17,000 fee across most courses, a genuinely low cost of living backed by the university’s own visa-evidence figures rather than a marketing claim, and a two-year Master’s route with a guaranteed research internship that few UK universities structure the same way.
  • That trade-off is worth stating plainly rather than glossing over: this is not the university to choose if a globally recognised research ranking is what your career plan actually needs. It is a strong option if teaching quality, affordability, and a verified employment record matter more to your decision than where the institution sits on a QS table.

Frequently Asked Questions

No official acceptance rate is published by Teesside, and the 31% figure circulating is explicitly sourced from “unofficial sources”. But one should treat it as a rough indicator rather than a verified statistic.
Yes: it holds a TEF Triple Gold rating, has won the THE University of the Year award twice (a first among modern UK universities), and offers a genuinely low, predictable fee structure that’s noticeably more affordable than many other UK universities.
Yes, particularly for postgraduate applicants: the university publishes a reduced entry threshold (50% or CGPA 5.5/10) for graduates of Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Jadavpur, and Kolkata Universities specifically, alongside an established Indian alumni community and over 2,200 South Asian students recruited in the last three academic years.
Teaching quality and employability rather than research prestige: a TEF Triple Gold rating, two THE University of the Year awards, Adobe Creative Campus status (a first in Europe), and consistently top-20-in-the-world rankings for its animation programmes.
The main campus is in Middlesbrough, North East England, with a second campus in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park offering block-taught computing and games courses.
Most undergraduate and one-year postgraduate courses cost £17,000 a year for international students: a flat, predictable rate across the majority of programmes, with some specialised courses (Nursing, Doctorates) priced differently.
Computer Science, Engineering, Business Management, Animation, and Health Sciences draw the most interest from Indian applicants, reflecting the university’s strengths in industry-facing, employability-focused education.
Teesside runs both September and January intakes with no single fixed university-wide deadline: check your specific course page for its exact cutoff, and apply as early as possible since the £4,000 deposit and CAS issuance both take time to process before your visa application.
No, Middlesbrough is roughly 250 miles north of London, about a 2.5–3-hour train journey. Teesside does, however, have a dedicated London campus in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for students who specifically want to study in the capital.
Its Adobe Creative Campus status (the first in Europe), a TEF Triple Gold rating, and winning the Times Higher Education University of the Year award twice: the only modern UK university to do so.
