Student Visa for New Zealand
Student Visa for New Zealand
Students who plan to stay in New Zealand for more than three months must apply for a student visa. Once granted, a student visa allows them to stay in the country for up to four years (depending on the duration of their course) and may permit them to work for up to 20 hours per week, provided they are enrolled in a recognized higher education institution in New Zealand.
At Global Opportunities, we provide students with end-to-end professional guidance in preparing and submitting their student visa applications to Immigration New Zealand through our commercial partner in India, M/s TT Services Pvt. Ltd.
Documents Required for a New Zealand Student Visa
To obtain a visa to study in New Zealand, students must meet the requirements set by Immigration New Zealand.
If students are enrolling in a programme of study for the first time, they must have an Offer of Place from a New Zealand education provider.
The Offer of Place must include:
- The education provider’s name and contact details.
- The name of the programme of study and the minimum time required to complete it.
- Proof that the programme of study and the education provider meet New Zealand’s requirements for international students.
- The total tuition fee for the entire programme or, if the programme is longer than one year, the annual tuition fee.
- Information on whether tuition fees must be paid.
- Whether the fees are charged at domestic or international rates.
- Whether the study programme is full-time or part-time.
Confirmation that all requirements under the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students have been met, including accommodation arrangements for students under 18 years of age and any programme prerequisites.
Tertiary Education Providers
- Private Training Establishments (PTEs) may offer international students approved programmes of study that are longer than three months and registered with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). The PTE must be accredited by NZQA to deliver the programme.
- Institutions, including universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and wānanga, may offer approved programmes of study that are longer than three months and are registered with NZQA. The institution must be accredited to provide the programme. In addition, enrolling an international student must not prevent a New Zealand student or an NZAP student from obtaining a place at the institution.
Health and Character Requirements
International students must meet New Zealand’s health and character requirements. People who have committed serious crimes may not be allowed to enter New Zealand.
Evidence of Funds to Support Yourself
- Sufficient funds held in New Zealand by the student or on the student’s behalf;
- A financial undertaking to cover the student’s accommodation and living costs;
- Sponsorship by an acceptable sponsor to cover the student’s accommodation and living costs; or
- Financial assistance is available to the student under aid programmes operated in New Zealand by a government agency.
Passport
Students must hold a valid passport that remains valid for at least three months beyond the end of their intended stay.
Visa Conditions
Once students have a student visa, they must meet certain conditions during their stay:
- They must attend the educational institution specified on their visa.
- If they are required to be accompanied by a guardian, they must live with that person.
- They must be able to show that they are making satisfactory progress in their course of study.
- They may undertake only the work permitted under their student visa conditions.
- They must obey New Zealand laws.
- They may stay in New Zealand only for the period allowed by their visa.
If students breach any of these conditions, they may be liable for deportation.
