What is GMAT?

GMAT is the Graduate Management Admission Test, which is basically a computer-based test. The GMAT helps in measuring skills that are important in the study of management. This test gives more emphasis on one’s critical thinking power and reasoning. The schools having business management programs majorly MBA programs use the GMAT scores to judge an outstanding candidate. The GMAT test is an International level exam and it is accepted in 114 countries. The college admission committee members depend more on the GMAT scores rather than any other.

According to a survey, approximately 90% of the admissions in business schools for MBA programs are based on the candidate’s GMAT score. This score can alone make up or break up a candidate’s career.

Now, below are the top 10 points that an applicant needs to take care of while preparing for the GMAT:

4 sections of the GMAT

The GMAT exam is divided into 4 sections, where Analytical writing is the first important section. In this section, how well you communicate your idea about a particular topic will be measured. In simple terms, you have to critically analyze the reason behind the argument given. The second section of the exam measures how well you evaluate the information given to you. This is known as integrated reasoning. Now, in the third part, you will be given some sort of data that you need to analyze and draw conclusions. This is a quantitative assessment. Now, comes the final section of the test, which is Verbal. This section evaluates one’s ability of how well you read and understand the written material.

  • Computer-adaptive Section of GMAT

The computer-adaptive implies that the applicant will be now answering the test on a computer machine. Here, in this section, you will be judged by the computer with the help of numerous applications on how well or how bad you answered the questions. The score in this section will depend upon the number of difficult questions you answered and the number of correct responses you gave.

  • 4 Scores of GMAT

In the GMAT, the applicant receives section-wise scores. In this, the analytical writing is measured from 0 to 6 where 0 stands for a minimum in half-point scores. The integrated reasoning section is scored in the single-digit interval but ranges from 1 to 8. The remaining two sections i.e. qualitative and verbal both are measured on a scale of 0 to 60.

  • Total Score

The total score ranges from 200 to 800. It takes into account the verbal and quantitative scores. As per a survey, approximately two-thirds of the applicants achieve a score of 400 to 600.

  • Validity of GMAT

The GMAT score is valid for 5 years and the result is declared within 20 days of the exam conducted. So, students plan their tests accordingly.

  • Pass or Fail

In the GMAT results, no candidate is considered a pass or fail. To get admission to the business school you need to check the score range that the desired institution accepts to study abroad.

  • Online Resources

The official website of GMAT provides many free questions to practice. There are also certain free software available that contains practice papers, and answers with proper explanations. Also, one can find a complete step-by-step advisor for the preparation on the official GMAT website. Apart, from the official websites, there are numerous other websites that help you with the same.

  • Preparation Hours

One needs to prepare for the GMAT extensively. The candidates approximately spend 51 hours fully preparing themselves for the exam.

  • Language of GMAT

The test is conducted only and only in the English language.

  • Test Day Rules

On the day of the test, the candidate is not allowed to take any sort of electronic device, print material, and not even your watch. Only your appointment letter and an id proof will be allowed. The duration of the GMAT test is 3 hours and 30 minutes, where the applicant is allowed to take two short breaks but optional.
