The University of Sussex is one of the leading Universities of UK with an international reputation for top quality research and innovative styles of teaching. The University of Sussex was founded in the 1960's and was the first of the new wave of universities or the 'plate glass' universities that refers to the first of a new generation of red brick Universities. The University was established as a company and it was granted its Royal Charter on 16 August 1961. In these approximately 50 years the university has progressed rapidly and has gained a remarkable reputation all over the world.
Loaction & Weather
The University of Sussex is located at Falmer on the outskirts of Brighton. Sussex is the only English university located entirely within an area of outstanding natural beauty, the South Downs. Brighton is within easy reach of London and major international airports at Gatwick and Heathrow. It takes less than an hour to reach Brighton from London. London Gatwick is the closest airport to Brighton that is 30 minutes journey by train. In addition to trains Brighton is also easily accessible by other means of public transport as it has good road, air, and sea links also. Also Falmer train station is directly opposite the university campus. The weather in Brighton is variable but Sussex enjoys more hours of sunshine annually than anywhere else in the U.K. Average temperature range from 5-10 degrees in winter to 20-25 in summer.
Campus
The campus of the University of Sussex is situated in the rolling parkland, next to the Falmer's railway station just a few minutes from Brighton. Sussex has one of the most beautiful campus locations in Britain. The Campus was designed by Sir Basil Spence and it combines award winning architecture and green open spaces. It is surrounded by the South Downs National Park. The buildings won several awards and in 1993, the buildings in the heart of the campus were given listed building status. Falmer House is one of the only two educational buildings to be given a Grade 1 status of exceptional interest.
Sports and Activities
The University of Sussex is very active in providing a healthy lifestyle and ample opportunities of sports for its students. It runs classes and courses during the term time in which students can enroll. These classes include Yoga, Pilates, Ballet, Belly dancing, Salsa, Trapeze and group exercises including Boxercise, circuit training and cardio kick.
The University has the Sports Centre and the Falmer Sports complex. The sports centre has two multi-purpose sports halls, a fitness room. indoor cricket nets, four glass backed championship squash courts, dance and martial arts studio, therapy room and a sports injury clinic. The Falmer sports complex has an air conditioned fitness room , a strength and conditioning room, two traditional squash courts, six hard tennis courts, a floodlit artificial turf pitch for hockey and football, grass sport pitches for cricket , football and rugby and outdoor cricket nets. The teams of the university competes in various sports and the universities also allows its students to participate in various outdoor pursuits such as sailing, mountaineering, skiing and snow boarding, surfing and wind surfing etc...In addition, there is a university wide scheme called the Healthy Campus initiative to promote a positive state of health and well being among the students and the staff.
