Manchester Metropolitan University was formed by the combination of several colleges, which were founded in 19th century. On 1st Jan 1970 Manchester Polytechnic was formed by the merger of Manchester College of Art & Design, Manchester College of Commerce founded in 1889 & John Dalton College of Technology. On 1st Jan 1977, polytechnic merged with Didsbury College of education & Hollings College. On 1st Jan 1983 it merged with City of Manchester College of Higher Education. In 1987 institution became founding member of Northern Consortium. Polytechnic became a cooperate body on 1st April 1989,according to education reform act 1988.It became university under the terms of further & higher education act ,1992 under the new title of “ Manchester Metropolitan University”. This new title was approved by Privy Council on 15th September 2009.
Campuses
Manchester Metropolitan University is based over seven campuses. Five campuses are in Manchester area and two are in Cheshire. Main campuses of Manchester Metropolitan University are following:
- All Saints Campus: This campus is situated in Manchester. This campus is well connected with road and rail links. Oxford road station is just at five minutes walk from All Saints Campus.
- Alsager Campus: It is located in Cheshire. This campus is easily accessible by rail and road links.
- Aytoun Campus: This campus is situated in Manchester. This campus is at the distance of 5 minutes walk from Piccadilly station and 10 minutes walk from Oxford Road Station.
- Crewe Campus: This campus is situated in Cheshire. This campus is at the distance of 5 minutes walk from Crewe Station.
- Didsbury Campus: This campus is situated in Manchester. Trains run from Piccadilly and Oxford Station to East Didsbury Station. From Didsbury Station it is just 5 minutes walk to Didsbury campus.
- Elizabeth Gaskell Campus: This campus is situated in Manchester. This campus is at the distance of 2 miles from Manchester City Centre.
- Hollings Campus: This campus is situated in Manchester. This campus is at the distance of 3 miles from Manchester City Centre.
Sports and Activities
Manchester Metropolitan University is highly concerned about the health of its students. It provides both recreational & competitive sports for its students. Manchester Metropolitan has aquatic centre. It is a 30 million pound swimming pool. This aquatic centre has an Olympic standard 50 meter pool. It also has additional 50 meter training pool for athletic training .Manchester Metropolitan University also has Manchester sugden sports centre. This sports centre is equipped with 100 new fitness suites. These fitness suites are equipped with state of art resistance, cardio vascular training machines & free weight area. Manchester metropolitan university is also equipped with five badminton courts, sports hall, and 60 station fitness suite & tennis court. Manchester Metropolitan University also has student union. Student union provides exciting social, cultural & sporting activities. Manchester Metropolitan University has student advice centre. This centre provides free, confidential, impartial & non judgmental advice. It is the place where students can relax and can make life long friends.

Manchester Metropolitan University is at the distance of two and half hour by train from London. There is lot of rainfall all the year round. So it is advisable to bring umbrella and warm clothing for winters. One should also bring waterproof coat and shoes along with them.
