About University of Greenwich
University of Greenwich traces its origin to 1890,when Britain’s second polytechnic was opened near the Thames at woodwich to teach practical and commercial skills to London workers. Polytechnic was first in the country to offer part time day release and sandwich courses. Over the years ,many specialist organizations have joined the institution providing it diverse strength in subjects such as teacher training, architecture, engineering and history. The name Thames polytechnic was adopted in 1970.It became university of Greenwich when it was awarded university status in 1992.
University of Greenwich has three campuses. They are following:
- Avery Hill: It is situated in the south east London district of Eltham.
- Greenwich : It is situated in the historic London borough.
- Medway : It is situated in Chatham Maritime, Kent
Location And Weather
University of Greenwich is London based university. Avery Hill and Greenwich campuses are located in London where as Medway campus is in Kent. University of Greenwich is connected with excellent rail and road links. Weather of London changes very frequently. It’s very difficult to predict weather .Students must bring warm clothes along with them for winters.
Sports And Activities

University of Greenwich has sports teams & clubs .They are organized by student unions and sports societies. University of Greenwich is equipped with new sports hall with netball, basket ball, cricket nets, volleyball & 5 side football. University of Greenwich also provides outdoor facilities to its students. Outdoor facilities of University of Greenwich include 6 football pitches, outdoor tennis & net ball courts. It provides discount to students for getting membership of sport clubs & societies. University of Greenwich has opened a new gym on the Avery hill campus. This gym is equipped with brand new equipments including cardio vascular , resistance machines & free weights. Opening hours of gym are adjusted during the university’s vacation period. University of Greenwich also has student union. Student union is a democratic organization run by students. Student Union takes care of welfare of its students. To avail services provided by student union one has to become its member. Student Union is the voice of students. It is a means through which students can put there views & demands in the front of university. All members of student union can vote in the annual elections of student union. Student Union provides bars & café’s for its students. It is a place where students can escape from the pressure of studies & make new friends.
