About the University of Durham

The third oldest university in England after Oxford and Cambridge University Durham University is a world class university with two campuses - one in the city of Durham and the other at Queen's Campus in Stockton. However, both the universities showcase Durham university’s commitment towards high quality teaching and learning .Durham university is collegiate, with colleges providing residential, social and welfare facilities for their student members. The university’s main functions are divided between the central departments of the University and 16 colleges. The departments are entrusted with performing research and providing centralized lectures to students, whereas the colleges are responsible for the domestic arrangements and welfare of undergraduate students, graduate students, post-doctoral researches and some University staff. The decision regarding student admissions rests with the colleges.

The latest University League Table 2010 published by The Complete University Guide ranks Durham University as 5th best university after Oxford and Cambridge university. The University was also named Sunday Times University of the Year in 2005.

Sports & other Activities

85% of the students at Durham University regularly participate in some or the other sport giving testimony to the high level of importance accorded to sporting excellence at Durham University. Cricket, rugby (union and league), squash and football are the major sports.

The university is recognized as a Centre of Cricketing Excellence by the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Marylebone Cricket Club . Rowing and Fencing at Durham University are also being recognized as centers of excellence.

Durham University’s rowing team has been the BUSA rowing champion for the past 6 years The Doxbridge sporting tournament is an annual sporting event in which the Durham University, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge participate.

Apart from sports, music and drama are also highly rated activities in Durham University, marked by the Durham University Chamber Choir and Orchestral Societies. The Durham Drama Festival is an annual festival held in the university focusing on the talents of Durham's theatre performers. The Durham University Light Opera Group produces four musicals per year.

Location

Durham city is situated 13 miles (21 km) to the south west of Sunderland, England.

Durham City is the main campus of the university and contains 14 of the 16 colleges along with most of the academic departments. The city campus is divided into several different sites like the science site, the library etc.

The second campus is Queen’s campus is located in the town of Stockton-on-Tees some 30 minutes away from the Durham City Campus .The Queen’s campus around 2,000 full-time students, two residential colleges (John Snow and Stephenson Colleges) and the Wolfson Research Institute.
