The University of Chester has a long and distinguished history. It was established in 1839 by a group of prominent local figures including Britain’s greatest 19th century Prime Minister - William Gladstone. We were the first institution in England set up to train teachers and are one of the oldest higher education institutions in the UK pre-dating all universities except Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and London. Today the University of Chester currently has about 15,000 students enrolled on full-time and part-time degree courses across its campuses. Chester has long been a favoured location for some of the international market’s biggest players. Companies such as Airbus, Bank of America, HBOS, Bristol Myers Squibb and Marks & Spencer all have large scale, long-term operations based in the immediate area along with a myriad of local businesses and SMEs and the University has built strong links with these organisations and the wider business community. This both enhances the relevance of our degrees and helps our students to find professional work-based placements. In choosing Chester, you will be selecting an institution with a strong learning tradition, and one which will challenge you to give the best of yourself in your academic work and your contribution to our student community. In return, we will give you one of the best experiences of your life.
