QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY BELFAST

Founded by Queen Victoria in 1845, Queen’s University Belfast has a distinguished history of academic achievement.  Queen’s is one of only twenty members of the elite Russell Group of research-intensive universities in the UK. A wide variety of courses are offered at both undergraduate and postgraduate level through three faculties: Medicine, Health and Life Sciences; Engineering and Physical Sciences; and Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

ACADEMIC STRENGTHS

The Times Good University Guide has ranked several of Queen's subjects within the UK top 10 (Accountancy and Finance, Agriculture, Celtic Studies, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Dentistry, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Food Science, Mechanical Engineering, Pharmacy, Physics, and Town and Country Planning and Landscape).

The UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) figures reveal that research in 33 out of 40 units assessed at Queen's is of national and international quality. Sixteen units were rated in the top category - grade 5 and 5*. Three areas were singled out as centres of international excellence. In the UK government’s university teaching assessment, more than two thirds of the subject areas visited are rated "excellent". Queen's has scored particularly strongly in the guidance and support provided for students and the facilities that are available.

Areas of research excellence at Queen's range across the whole spectrum: from Creative Writing and Poetry in the Seamus Heaney Centre to the design of new catalysts for cars; from Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies to Vascular Biology and its implications for Vision Science; from Cognition and Culture to Renewable Energy; and from Drug Design and Synthesis to Healthcare for the Mother and Child.

Queen’s impressive track record of achievement in research and education is also reflected in the development of world-class centres of research excellence across the full range of disciplines. There are twenty-one research-led Schools, comprising over 90 research clusters.

LOCATION

Queen’s is located close to the centre of Belfast, capital city of Northern Ireland. Queen's campus is located in attractive South Belfast only 15 minutes walk from the city centre and in a lively area with plenty of student facilities. Culturally, Belfast is extremely vibrant; a variety of arts festivals such as the Belfast Festival at Queen's take place throughout the year, in addition to the entertainments offered by the city's many theatres, cinemas, museums, art galleries, pubs and clubs.

International students at Queen's are guaranteed a place in University accommodation. Residences are located within easy walking distance of the University in a pleasant residential area. All accommodation is self-catering and networked and a significant proportion is en-suite.

Travelling to and from Belfast is easy and economical. Most British cities are within an hour's flying time from one of Belfast's two airports. Competition between budget airlines means that fares are low and there are now many flights each day to the rest of the British Isles and mainland Europe at student-friendly prices.
